That’s completely understandable. It’s a multi-step treatment, and knowing what to expect at each stage can make the whole experience feel a lot less intimidating. So let’s walk through it together, from your very first consultation to the moment you leave with a fully restored smile.
Starting With a Consultation and Treatment Plan
The first step is a thorough evaluation. When you come into our Northgate office, Dr. Ajwant Goraya will examine your teeth, gums, and jawbone, typically using X-rays or 3D imaging to get a clear picture of your oral health. This is where we figure out whether dental implants are the right fit for you and, if so, what kind of implant solution makes sense.
Not everyone’s situation is the same. Some patients need a single implant to replace one missing tooth. Others may be candidates for All-on-4 dental implants, which can restore an entire arch using just four strategically placed implants. During this appointment, we’ll talk through your options honestly and help you understand what the treatment timeline looks like for your specific case.
Preparatory Work (If Needed)
Some patients need a little prep work before implant placement can begin. If you’ve had bone loss in your jaw, a bone graft may be necessary to create a stable foundation for the implant. Gum disease, if present, also needs to be addressed first. These steps aren’t always required, but when they are, they’re important for the long-term success of your implant.

Implant Placement Surgery
Once you’re cleared for placement, Dr. Goraya will surgically insert a small titanium post into your jawbone, right where the missing tooth root used to be. This is done with local anesthesia, so most patients are comfortable throughout the procedure. The titanium post acts as an artificial root, and over the next several weeks, it fuses with the surrounding bone through a process called osseointegration.
This healing phase is one of the most important parts of the process. It typically takes a few months, and during that time your bone is essentially bonding with the implant to create a rock-solid foundation. We’ll check in with you during this period to make sure everything is progressing well.
Placing the Abutment
After the implant has fully integrated, a small connector piece called an abutment is attached to the top of the post. This is a shorter, simpler appointment compared to the placement surgery. The abutment is what your final crown (or other restoration) will attach to. Your gum tissue will need a couple of weeks to heal around it before we move to the last step.
The Final Restoration
This is the part most patients look forward to. A custom-made crown, bridge, or full-arch restoration is securely attached to the abutment. We take care to match the color, shape, and feel of your natural teeth so the result looks completely natural. When it’s done, you’ll have a tooth that functions just like the real thing because, structurally, it’s built to work the same way.
