If you’ve been thinking about improving your smile, a cosmetic dentistry consultation is the natural first step. Many people put it off simply because they’re not sure what to expect, and that uncertainty can make the whole idea feel bigger than it needs to be. The good news is that a first consultation is really just a conversation, and knowing how to prepare for it can make the experience a lot more comfortable and productive.
Think About What You Actually Want to Change
Before you even walk through our door, it helps to spend a little time thinking about your smile goals. Are you bothered by discoloration? Gaps between teeth? Chips, cracks, or teeth that feel out of proportion? You don’t need to arrive with a formal list or know the clinical name for anything. Just having a general sense of what you’d like to address gives your dentist something real to work with.
It can also help to bring a photo or two, whether that’s an old photo of your smile that you loved, or a smile you’ve admired on someone else. These visuals aren’t something we’ll try to copy exactly, but they’re a great way to communicate what “a better smile” looks like to you personally.
Pull Together Your Dental History
If you’re a new patient, we’ll ask for some basic health information at your first visit. It’s worth thinking ahead about any previous dental work you’ve had done, any current sensitivities or concerns, and any medications you’re taking that might be relevant. Patients coming to us from Shoreline, Greenwood, Ballard, Fremont, and other parts of the Seattle area sometimes ask whether they need to bring records from a previous dentist. It’s not required, but if you have recent X-rays, bring them along. It can save time and help us give you a more complete picture right away.
What Happens During the Consultation
At Seattle’s Family Dentistry in Northgate, a cosmetic consultation typically starts with a conversation. Dr. Goraya will ask about your concerns, your goals, and your overall dental health. From there, she’ll do an examination to get a full picture of where things stand, because cosmetic work is most successful when the foundation is healthy.
Depending on what you’re interested in, she may walk you through options like teeth whitening, Invisalign, dental veneers, or crowns. Each option has different timelines, care requirements, and costs, and the consultation is the right time to ask about all of it. There are no commitments at this stage. Think of it as gathering information so you can make a decision that feels right for you.
Questions Worth Asking
A good consultation goes both ways. Some questions that tend to come up and are absolutely worth raising include how long a particular treatment takes, what the recovery or adjustment period looks like, and what results are realistic for your specific situation. If cost is a factor, ask about it directly. We accept most insurance plans and offer financing through CareCredit and flex-pay options, so there are usually ways to make a plan work within a budget that makes sense for you.
New patients also receive free Go Whitening Strips, which is a nice bonus if whitening is part of what you have in mind.
A Few Practical Tips Before You Go
Arrive a few minutes early if you can, especially if you’re filling out new patient paperwork. Our office is located on Aurora Ave North, and it’s easy to find for patients coming from Northgate, WA and the surrounding neighborhoods. Office hours run Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:30pm, so scheduling something mid-week often means a shorter wait.
Most importantly, come as you are. There’s no need to prep your smile or feel self-conscious. We work with patients of all ages and all starting points, and the whole point of a consultation is to help you figure out what’s possible. Families from across Seattle and the surrounding areas come to us for cosmetic care, and we’ve found that the people who feel the most satisfied with their results are the ones who asked the most questions up front.
If you’re ready to take that first step or just want to talk through your options before committing to anything, please give us a call or drop us an email. We’re happy to help you figure out where to start.
